Sabines, who had come to Rome for seeking their women, after one battle only, they stayed in Rome in peace and trust of the Roman people. From here the kingdom of Romulus and Tatius was not only shared but also harmonized. After some years however, certain relatives of King T. Tatius offered violence to ambassdors of Laurentium, and when the Laurentians had placed themselves in the trust of Tatius anf they entrusted their affair to him, the influence of his people overcame justice, in the case of Tatius. Therefore he turned their punishment onto himself, so in Lavanium after he came for a solemn sacrifice, he was killed by a stampede of Laurentians. Romulus heard about this thing not with so great anger as he was worth, whether faith in the kingdom was lacking or he considered the killing of Tatius justified.
Not later by many years, Romulus himself put down mortal life by an amazing way. For as he was having an assembly in the Campus, a sudden storm with rain and a big clashing noise and thunder concealed the king with dense clouds, and this took away his sight from the assembly, and then Romulus was not on the ground. Soldiers to whom the king had always been at heart, after seren and tranquille light of the sun came again after such a stormy day, when they saw an empty royal seat, even though fear was seattle by Fathers who had stood near the king, who said, “Lofty king–wonderful to say!--he was seized by the storm,” yet they kept sad silence for some time, just like people filled with fear of orphans. Then after a few of the multitude of men began a greeting, the whole gang of young men saluted Romulus as a god, son of a god, their king, and parent of the city Rome, and they were asking the new god for peace by prayers and they were shouting, “Look back at us, father, and take us into your trust!”
Then there were some other people, for whom had another opinion. The king, they thought, he had been torn apart by the power of the Fathers, who then had brought parts of his body home under their clothes. For Romulus had not been so pleasing to the Fathers as to the young citizens, who even though surrendered to nobody at arms and had conquered neighboring tribes, Fidenates and Veientes, however he had exposed the new city so often to dangers of war. Romulus after death or consecration left no son, that which makes selection for a new king difficult. So the original Romans and those who were Sabines disputing with words of the kingship one with another, since they will receive neither a Sabine king nor the Sabines will accept a Roman king. Finally however, it is found, a certain man by the name of Numa Pompilius, a Sabine to be sure, but however a man as good anf as much piety as no one, whether Roman or Sabine, whom the two people choose as king.
